A Man's Value Lies In His Character.
As The Mirror Reflects A Man's Face,
The Character Reflects The Personality.
Character is the moral and mental qualities seen and observed in a person.Character can also be described as attitude, behaviour and manners.
As human faces are different and unique,so also the various human character each exhibits.
Character is as unique as a finger print.A society is judged by the character of her citizens. If the citizens are humane, then the society is a humane society. If the citizens are unfriendly and hostile, the society is said to be unfriendly and hostile. For this reason,it is necessary that the character of a society be properly built.
To have a society with a well built character image or reputation, the individual character matters most.Build an individual's character, build a society.
Different agencies have been saddled with the responsibility of building man's character.Such agencies are schools, religious organizations and character-building organizations. They all strive to see that man develops a noble character worthy of emulation. They do this through teachings, seminars and character orientation programmes and workshops.
It is expected that a good educational system should be able to make the student a law abiding citizen worthy in learning and character.
Education devoid of noble character is like a lifeless human body:the society feels the pain and anguish of heart. The society becomes robbed of her happiness.
Nevertheless,as an individual, let us consider how you can build a noble character.
HOW CAN I BUILD A NOBLE CHARACTER?
Your character is like a flower seed in your hands. You are to plant the seed in a fertile ground. You water it and nurture it with the necessary manure to help it grow. You watch over it against pests and diseases attacks.
When your flower finally sprouts up displaying its magnificent beauty, you end up rejoicing for a job well done.
My friend, society will celebrate you when you you become a paragon of virtue.
The following steps will help you build that noble character you so much dream and cherish:
i) SELF-REALIZATION
Self-realization is necessary if you must build your character. You must realize that you can be whom you want to be .You must be mentally prepared to accept the great potentials in you which when used will make you great, noble and admirable to others.
For each day you live, you notice that the needed oxygen for your existence is always there for you.In the same way are these great potentials in you always there, except that you have to make conscientious efforts to think and act properly.
Do not ever think you can not be honest and truthful, no matter how dishonest your mind may accuse you of being.
Do not ever think you can not break free from drug addiction, use of abusive language, anger and any other character defect.
Tell yourself you can.Your "Will Power" is a precious seed, why not sow it into "I Can Do It" fertile soil, and see your character change tremendously?
What makes you think you cannot be amiable, kind, bold, decent and lovable to the level of being seen as a "Moral Role Model",(MRM),in your neighbourhood and community?
If you think you can not ,then you can not.Your mind could be the barrier to your forming a pleasant character or the key to your success in this journey of character building.
ii) SELF-EVALUATION
Do well to write down those qualities in your life you consider to be your strength and weaknesses.
Be sincere to your conscience as you write the list of "My Strength And The Weaknesses'.You may be baffled to find out a character defect which in the first place, should not have been in your life, but is now existing.Do not feel bad:just make a change.
Ask yourself some questions such as,how long have I been living this way?How come this quality in me?Did I develop this character based on the influence of my parents, guardians, family or friends? This character of mine I consider as my strength,is it really so,when a second party judges me? What practical steps can I take to strengthen my areas of "strength" and overcome the "weaknesses"? Of what benefit will my character building exercise be to me and the society?
Have you noticed that I refer to "My Strength" and "The Weaknesses" not "My Weaknesses"?
Well, don't feed your mind with the notion that the observed character defect is an integral part of you. To say "my weakness" would imply that it is an integral part of you.Since these percieved mental and moral weaknesses can be done away with, the way you can discard your old oil from your engine replacing it with new oil,so also you can transform your character to a noble one. These weaknesses are not inborn into your cells:YOU ACQUIRED THEM, SO CAN YOU CHANGE THEM!
iii)SELF-IMPROVEMENT
Engage in self-improvement exercises after self-evaluation.
You can ask close friends to honestly write a brief report about your character as percieved by them.In their write-ups,they should also proffer solutions to these mental and moral weaknesses which they have observed. On your part ,you should endeavour to consider the various remarks and make necessary character improvement based on the recommendations. However, you must be the unbiased judge, not necessarily your friends. You have your life to live. Not all recommendations may be necessary, since people reason differently concerning certain issues of life.Be sincere to yourself, you won't err.

Read books related to character building.Study the character of some renown men to emulate the good nature you see in them, avoiding their errors.
Always speak out loudly to yourself about the new nature or character you long to have.Assuming you want to do away with telling lies, why not hold your tongue and say to youself,"This is a truthful tongue"?
Are you easily provoked? Then say to yourself,"I am A Mild Man".
Do not underestimate your "new character confession",it works !
